Two households becoming one. You know what that means?
Well, yes, true love. Maybe marriage. All that good stuff. But also …
Double the air fryers.
Twice the streaming subscriptions.
And now two sets of insurance policies when there might be savings waiting for you two lovebirds.
When the honeymoon wraps up or the housewarming party is over, set a reminder to check in on your policies.
Here’s a quick checklist. No seating chart required. Open bar optional.
Gather the Paperwork
One of you may know every policy number. The other may be pretty sure there’s an insurance app somewhere.
Start by putting your current auto, home or renters policies in one place.
Then ask:
- Are our addresses and household details up to date?
- Who is listed on each policy?
- Have we reviewed these since we started living together?
- Could a different arrangement make better financial sense?
A review can help you understand whether your coverage fits your life today and whether there are opportunities to save.
Look Around Your Home
The couch. The laptops. The nice cookware nobody is allowed to put in the dishwasher.
Your belongings have probably changed since moving day. Wedding gifts may add a few more things.
Take an inventory together. Go room by room. Snap photos. Save receipts when you have them.
Then ask your agent how your home or renters policy applies to each person’s belongings and whether your coverage limits deserve another look.
Not the most romantic evening activity. Still useful.
Give the Rings a Minute
You put plenty of thought into choosing engagement and wedding rings. Put a little thought into insuring them, too.
Ask:
- What does our current policy cover?
- Are there jewelry limits or exclusions?
- Should we consider additional coverage?
- Do we need receipts or appraisals?
Include any family jewelry passed down for the occasion. “My grandmother gave it to me” is a good reason to bring it up.
Talk About the Cars
Who drives what?
Not just whose name is on the title. Who actually takes which car to work, runs errands or handles the long drive?
Tell your agent about your driving arrangements, where the vehicles are kept and any changes to your commutes.
Ask how drivers should be listed and what policy options are available. Get those answers before canceling or combining anything.
