,Spring is here, summer is coming — and the water is calling!
Whether you’re fishing the Potomac, cruising the Chesapeake or jetting around on a personal watercraft, spring is when your boat stretches its sea legs — and your insurance policy needs to keep up.
Here’s the thing many folks don’t realize: boat insurance isn’t always required by law.
But skipping it?
You could find yourself up the creek without a paddle.
When Is Boat Insurance Required in Maryland or Virginia?
Let’s start with the fine print:
- Maryland law does not require boat owners to carry insurance.
- Virginia also doesn’t require it for most recreational watercraft.
That doesn’t mean you’re off the hook.
If you finance your boat or store it at a marina, there’s a good chance insurance is mandatory under those agreements.
More importantly, liability risks, theft and storm damage don’t check your state’s legal code before they strike.
What Boat Insurance Covers
Think of boat insurance as your life preserver on the water. A solid policy can help cover:
- Liability – If someone gets hurt or their property is damaged while you’re boating.
- Physical Damage – From storms, accidents, fire or theft.
- Uninsured Boater Coverage – If another boater hits you and they don’t have coverage.
- Towing & Emergency Services – Because even boats break down, and on the water, that tow can cost you.
And yes — jet skis and other personal watercraft can (and often should) be covered, too.
Doesn’t My Homeowners Policy Cover My Boat?
Maybe … but not fully.
Most homeowners insurance policies offer limited coverage for boats — often only for boats under a certain size or horsepower, and with little to no liability protection. That means if someone is injured on your boat or your jet ski is stolen from the dock, your homeowners policy might not help much — if at all.
How Much Does Boat Insurance Cost?
It depends on the size, age and type of your boat, along with how and where you use it. But generally speaking, basic boat insurance is often more affordable than people expect, especially compared to the financial hit of an uncovered claim.
Think of it this way: a little coverage now beats a big expense later.
