Michael SandersMichael Sanders proudly represents the fourth generation of his family to carry on the torch of a business started by his great-grandfather in 1903.

Working for the family business wasn’t always a certainty for him, but he got his start in the insurance agency working for State Farm in the Baltimore area. When an opportunity arose to join E.L. Sanders Insurance as an agent and return to Southern Maryland, he packed up his family and came home.

Eight years later, it was clearly a smart decision, and Michael is a vital part of our agency. He takes amazing care of his clients and, as he points out, is pretty handy when someone is needed to reach supplies on the highest shelves!

Coming from a family that owned an insurance agency, what made you start your career at State Farm? And what prompted the move to E.L. Sanders in 2014?
I was living in the Baltimore area at the time, and there was an opportunity at State Farm in their claims division. It sounded interesting to me. As a young adult, I wasn’t sure where my path would ultimately lead. In 2014, one of the agency’s longtime agents decided he wanted to begin the transition into retirement. My family and I made the move from Baltimore to Southern Maryland so I could give the agency side of insurance a try.

What are your primary responsibilities at E.L. Sanders?
I am an Agent here at the agency. I work with my clients on getting their policies written and reviewing as their needs change. I am also often asked to carry heavy supplies and reach items on high shelves due to my height. (haha!)

What do you enjoy most about working in the insurance field?
I enjoy my clients and interactions with them. I also enjoy getting to meet new people.

What does it mean to you to be part of the next generation of a family-owned business that has been around so long?
It is a big responsibility. My family has built a great business with a good reputation in the community.

What do you most enjoy outside of work?
I have hunted for most of my life and have continued to do so when time allows. I also enjoy taking trips with my wife and children.
