It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Edward L. Sanders, Jr., has passed away. Ed represented the second generation of his family to lead E.L. Sanders Insurance Agency, and he touched the lives of countless people through his business, his volunteer activities, his friendships and, most importantly, his commitment to his family.
It’s difficult to put into words just how much he meant to all of us, so we’ll simply share his obituary and say thank you for all the kindness we’ve received during this difficult time.
Edward L. Sanders, Jr. (Ed) passed away peacefully at Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, MD on June 20, 2023, just nine days shy of his 91 st birthday. He was born in Washington, DC on June 29, 1932. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart School in 1949.
In 1954, Ed married his devoted wife of 68 years, Louise Cheslock. They had two children, Larry and Kay.
The summer after graduating from high school, Ed broke his ankle playing baseball and was unable to attend college. He then began working at his father’s insurance agency and never left. As a second-generation leader of Edward L. Sanders Insurance Agency, Inc., Ed leaves behind a legacy. His knowledge of the insurance business was unmatched during his time, and he prided himself on always being honest and fair in all of his interactions.
Ed was active in the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department serving as a volunteer firefighter, a leader on the building committee, and a lengthy term as secretary. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, founding director of the Bank of Southern Maryland, and active supporter of the Mount Carmel Monastery.
He enjoyed fishing his favorite spots on his Bertram boat, bird hunting, and his canine companions over the years. Anyone who knew Ed, also knew that if something was broken, he would repair it rather than replace it. He enjoyed any project involving a toolbox, and could fix almost anything.
Ed was predeceased by his parents Madoline and Edward L. Sanders, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Louise, his children, Larry (Sherrie) and Kay (Richard), grandchildren, Sara (Dave), Michael (Jessica), Edward (Kaitlyn), and Joseph, and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 29 from 9-10 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (205 St. Mary’s Avenue La Plata, MD 20646), followed by a Catholic mass, and repass in basement hall. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Mount Carmel Monastery (5678 Mount Carmel Road, La Plata, MD 20646-3625) or the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department (911 Washington Avenue, PO Box 728, La Plata, MD 20646-0728).
